Parents, Family, and Friends of Nampa Babe Ruth,
I’m grateful to have been elected as Nampa Babe Ruth's League President for 2022. I am grateful to my predecessor, Matt Wade and past Board Members for maintaining one of the most fun and thriving baseball and softball leagues in the Treasure Valley. This year we celebrate the league’s 40th Anniversary!
I also would like to thank our current Board Members and the many volunteers for your dedication and commitments. We have an impressive number of parents and volunteers ‘Stepping Up to the Plate’ this year to help continue to build the legacy of NBR. These volunteers give a lot of their time so our children can learn how to play the great games of baseball and softball, learn about sportsmanship, team work, how to win graciously, how to respond in defeat, and most importantly – how to grow up to be responsible and thoughtful citizens in their community.
Many of you know me personally from growing up in Nampa baseball. I played in NBR from 1991-1995. I was a member of the 1992 Bambino Division Champions (A’s), the 1995 juniors division Champions (Dodgers) and the 1995 Nampa All-Stars team that won gold at the First Security Games of Idaho. Then I played with Nampa American Legion Baseball with several of NBR’s coaches both past and present. We went on to win State Championships in 1996 ("A") and 1998 ("AA"). In 1998, I was drafted out of Skyview High School by the Houston Astros. In Skyview's 25 year history, I am still the only player to be drafted by MLB. Although MLB was a lifelong dream, I opted instead for a full baseball scholarship to the University of Utah where I finished my baseball career.
My favorite baseball memory to date is returning to NBR as a parent volunteer coaching the 2021 Nampa 9U All-Stars Team to an Idaho State Championship along with my brother, Coach Armando “Mo” Barrera, and now close friend who has also become like another brother to us, Coach Waylon Yarbrough. The friendships we developed on and off the fields will be cherished for a lifetime. We look forward to meeting new friends and families, as well.
You can find me at Stampede Park and Midway Fields throughout the season. I love talking baseball and softball with anyone who will engage. I would love for you to introduce yourself when you see me.
